Job Description
The Boldman House Museum Coordinator is a dynamic position for a creative, self-motivated individual who enjoys sharing history, engaging with the community, and supporting a unique historic home museum. The coordinator plays a vital role in the public experience at the Boldman House and contributes to outreach, collection care, light garden care, seasonal activities, and other duties as assigned.
The Dayton Historical Depot Society Boldman House Museum Coordinator is a part-time position not to exceed 24 hours per week or 1128 hours in one year, regularly Thursday through Saturday with some flexibility to be determined. Pay starts at $18/hr with opportunities to grow within the organization. The museum coordinator reports directly to the Executive Director.
Core Responsibilities:
• Museum Docent Duties:
o Greet and guide visitors during regular open hours with engaging and age-appropriate tours.
o Learn and share the history of the Boldman family, the home, and Dayton’s heritage.
o Support the Executive Director and volunteer docents during school tour programs and other scheduled tour groups.
• Events:
o Support and assist the Executive Director, the committees, and the volunteers with the coordination and planning of regular events or public programs at the Boldman House.
o Help decorate and prepare the home for seasonal or special events.
• Community Engagement & Outreach:
o Support positive public relations and promote awareness of the Boldman House Museum’s programs and mission.
o Maintain a warm and respectful relationship with Boldman House volunteers, helping foster a collaborative and appreciated atmosphere.
o Help brainstorm, share ideas, and assist with content for newsletters, social media and/or community outreach.
o Be present to represent the Boldman House Museum at local events, like parades or special weekends. (e.g., Dayton Days, Christmas Kick-Off).
• Light Collection Oversight:
o Assist with the ongoing organization, inventory maintenance, and accessioning of household artifacts in coordination with the Boldman House Committee. The coordinator will maintain organized records of the existing collection.
o Occasionally assist with exhibit elements and historical decorations (e.g., seasonal displays).
• Garden & Housekeeping Tasks:
o Provide light garden care with direction from the Garden Committee (weeding, watering, sweeping porches, etc.).
o Perform routine housekeeping: dusting, tidying exhibit areas, washing booties, and emptying trash as needed.
• Committee Representation & Monthly Updates:
o Prepare a brief written report summarizing the month’s highlights, visitor trends, and any needs or concerns.
o Attendance of monthly Boldman House Committee meetings is required, prepare meeting agenda, take notes and give a report.
o For informational purposes, the coordinator may be asked to attend DHDS board meetings to take notes, be present to answer questions or provide updates if necessary.
Skills & Abilities:
• Friendly, professional demeanor with a customer service mindset.
• Self-directed and organized, comfortable working alone or as part of a team.
• Public speaking ability and willingness to learn historical content.
• Comfortable using Microsoft Office and navigating social media platforms.
• Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
• Interest in historic homes, gardening, education, or nonprofit work a plus.
Dress Code:
Appropriate business/smart casual attire is required.
Reporting:
This position reports directly to the Executive Director of the Dayton Historical Depot Society. The museum coordinator will communicate directly with the Executive Director regarding volunteer coordination, events, assignments, scheduling and payroll.
The Boldman House Museum will be closed to the public from December 24 until January 31. There will be no guaranteed hours during this regularly scheduled closure.
There will be coordination with volunteer committees for events, garden care and historical guidance.
